Appeal for support for Paul Donnachie. No to all racism – so no to Israeli apartheid. Edinburgh Criminal Appeal Court, Lawnmarket (junction of Royal Mile and George IV Bridge) Wednesday 4 April, 9.30am. Paul Donnachie was convicted of racially aggravated conduct in Cupar Sheriff Court by Sheriff MacNair on the grounds that criticising someone’s Zionist political commitment is a form of ‘racism’. Convicting Donnachie, Sheriff MacNair stated in open court that “Saying a state is terrorist is the same as saying that all the citizens of the state are terrorist.” More here As Israeli crimes evoke rising anger, the first and last response of pro-Israel activists in Scotland, including the key witness in Paul Donnachie’s trial, is to smear supporters of Palestinian rights as driven by racism rather than opposition to apartheid. The racism smear is not a side issue in Palestine solidarity; it is the last weapon of defenders of the pariah state of Israel. SPSC saw off similar politically-driven charges helped by public support inside and outside the courtroom. We ask all supporters of human rights to join us to extend the same solidarity to Paul Donnachie, a committed anti-racist and supporter of Palestinian rights.

Signed: Kevin Connor Niel Forbes Vanesa Fuertes Sofiah MacLeod Mick Napier (The SPSC5 were charged with racism for solidarity with Palestine; charges were dismissed in April 2010 when Sheriff James Scott ruled that their "comments were clearly directed at the State of Israel", that, "The Israeli state is not a 'person'," and that to limit criticism of a state would "render worthless their article 10(1) rights [freedom of expression]": more here)

Thirty Palestinians killed by Israel in March, 300 imprisoned. Over the past month Israel carried out dozens of operations and military incursions in the Occupied Palestinian territories. "Thirty Palestinians were killed by Israel in March," said the International Solidarity Foundation for Human Rights, "most of them in the besieged Gaza Strip." The Foundation reported that three West Bank children under the age of 18 were killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank. Two of the children, Hamza Zayed Jaradat and Zayed Jomah Jaradat, both age 12, were killed by abandoned Israeli Army ordnance. The third minor, Zakaria Jamal Abu Arram (17) from the town of Yatta, was killed when Israeli soldiers raided and recaptured a recently-released exchange prisoner. According to the Foundation, the number of Palestinians being taken prisoner by Israeli Occupation forces is on the increase.

UN Panel uses the strongest language so far to highlight Israeli discrimination and racism. The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), was "appalled" by Israel’s racial segregation policies and that an advanced version of a forthcoming CERD report indicates that racial prejudice can be found in almost every facet of Israeli life.

ICC rejects Palestinian bid to investigate Israeli war crimes during 'Cast Lead' Gaza operation. International Criminal Court in The Hague says reason for decision is that Palestine is currently recognised by the United Nations as an 'observer,' not a 'Non-member State'.

Palestine Human Rights Campaign Aotearoa/New Zealand (PHRC)

We believe that a just peace in Palestine/Israel depends upon the return of Palestinian refugees to their homeland and the dismantling of the Zionist structure of the state of Israel, recognising that the further partitioning of Palestine in order to create the so-called two-state solution would lead only to further injustice and suffering.

We advocate the primacy of international law, the acceptance of which by the Israeli regime must be the basis for the ending of Israeli military occupation and all forms of ethnic discrimination.

We work to raise awareness of the international community's responsibility for upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the urgent need for the state of Israel to be called to account for its gross abuses of Palestinian human rights.

We call for the establishment of a unitary, secular and democratic state in Palestine/Israel, with full and equal citizenship rights for Palestinians, Israeli Jews and all other ethnic communities.

The Palestine Human Rights Campaign Aotearoa/New Zealand (PHRC) works to raise public awareness of the Palestinian people's struggle to resist Israeli military occupation and Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip. PHRC seeks to bring pressure on the New Zealand Government to join the majority of the international community in requiring Israel to:

  • observe all relevant UN Resolutions and Geneva conventions

  • cease ethnic discrimination and territorial annexation

  • abandon its militarism and violence
