Recent news updates:

18-month-old child dies after Israeli Army tear gas attack on Palestinian homes in May. An 18-month-old Palestinian infant, Abd al-Rahman Barghouti, died on Friday, some two months after suffering from tear gas inhalation when Israeli forces shot tear gas into Palestinian homes in the village of Abud, Ramallah. The infant was tear-gassed in his home as Israeli forces attacked, with live fire and other weapons, a protest demonstration in support of hunger-striking Palestinian prisoners. According to Wafa, Israeli soldiers had prevented Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances from reaching the infant's home to treat him. Medics were forced to make their way to the child on foot and carry him back to the ambulances a 30-minute walk away from Barghouti’s house, Wafa pointed out. https://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=777972

Israeli forces shoot and kill 2 young Palestinians during raid into Jenin refugee camp. 12 July 2017 | Israeli forces shot and killed two young Palestinians, one aged 17 and the other aged 20, wounding at least two others after an Israeli Army assault on the Jenin refugee camp. No casualties were reported among the heavily armed and armoured invading Israeli forces. Medical sources at the Khalil Suleiman Governmental Hospital said that 17-year-old Aws Muhammad Youssif Salameh had died in the hospital from wounds sustained in the Israeli Army attack. The Palestinian Red Crescent told Ma’an that 20-year-old Saad Nasser Hassan Abd al-Fattah Salah had been fatally shot in the head and chest by Israeli forces. The father of the pair killed by the Israeli Army had been permanently disabled after being shot in an Israeli Army attack some time in the past. https://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=778042

Israel approves 800 new settlement units in Occupied Jerusalem. 13 July 2017 | The Israeli Occupation municipality in Jerusalem yesterday approved the construction of 800 new settlement units in the city. The plan comprises 276 units in the illegal settlement of Pisgat Ze’ev, 120 in Neve Ya’akov, 200 in Ramot and 202 in Gilo. Jerusalem Mayor, Nir Barkat, stressed that “the work will strongly continue in order to get as many of the Jewish youths to live in Israel’s capital as possible.” Israel has also approved the construction of 71 housing units in the al-Sawahra Palestinian neighbourhood, and 29 others in Sharafat. All Israeli settlements are illegal under international law as they are built on land stolen from the Palestinians. https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20170713-israel-approves-800-new-settlement-units-in-occupied-jerusalem/

Israeli Army raids Hamas TV station in Hebron. During the raid, Israeli soldiers stole memory cards and hard drives from the Hamas-owned news media company 'Al-Quds TV'. The Israeli Army assault to suppress news provided from Palestinian sources took place overnight on Wednesday, 12 July. The raid is the third or fourth to have taken place within the last two years on news media stations and channels in the Hebron area.

Palestine Expo 2017 – the largest Palestine event in Europe – packed and successful. Despite the Best efforts of the Zionists to ban it, Palestine Expo has been an incredible success. The Zionists, led by the far-Right Jewish Human Rights Watch (which watches over attempts to implement human rights) and the virulently Islamophobia Campaign Against Anti-Semitism did their best to stop the biggest-ever Palestine event in Britain and probably in Europe. They tried every racist trick in the book but even Sajid David couldn't find enough of a pretext to destroy free speech on Palestine.

UN confirms Gaza is likely to be uninhabitable 3 years earlier than originally forecast. A decade of successive Israeli blitzes and continuing blockade has destroyed the Gaza Strip's economy and infrastructure. The people face declining income, health care, education, electricity and fresh water, a new UN report has revealed. “Across the board we're watching de-development in slow motion,” Robert Piper, the UN Co-ordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities in the Occupied Palestinian territory, said, adding: “Every indicator, from energy to water, to health care, to employment, to poverty, to food insecurity, every indicator is declining.” https://www.alaraby.co.uk/english/news/2017/7/11/gaza-may-already-be-unlivable-un-report

Remember Occupied Palestine

'the silent emergency'

Dave Clinch, Chair, North Devon PSC | https://bdsmovement.net/tags/uk

This morning (13July) in a long conversation on FB video with a dear friend in Gaza the terrible situation there was explained. Humidity is 84% this morning, electricity is down to two hours. No air conditioning in most homes and offices. More people are losing their jobs. The unemployment rate is now over 60%. Another child is due in my friend's family. I saw for the first time in over five years of Skype video etc. real desperation, almost tears. This is a person who I have laughed with, discussed family, politics and more. I was supposed to have run the Bethlehem 10k with him back in late March, but his clearance was cancelled and hasn't been renewed. Gaza is collapsing. He called it a “silent emergency”. Nobody is listening.

Already the population is traumatised by sustained and brutal attacks during an eleven-year siege. Who knows the consequences of bereavement, loss of limbs and organs, loss of work, hospitals without essential equipment and medicine, education of children forever damaged, infrastructure destroyed or severely damaged, clean water is at a premium? My friend who has a job and lives in an apartment with his family said he hadn't had a shower for four days. I know how important cleanliness is to Palestinians, just the same as ourselves. What a humiliation.

Food in the fridge has had to be ditched this week again, as there is hardly any power. Their three-year-old child had stopped bed-wetting a year ago. Now it's back. A child who has already endured three years of the blockade and a fifty-one day military assault from land, sea and air by the brutal Israeli regime, not to mention the daily military assaults and overflights breaking the sound barrier. Daily reports from the Palestine Monitoring Group are available on North Devon PSC Facebook page. There is also an 'inner Occupation' where Fatah President Abbas is pressurising Hamas to come to the negotiating table, so that his party can regain control in Gaza. He is encouraging Israel to continue its barbaric blockade for this cynical reason. Needless to say, none of this this would be happening if Palestine had not been Occupied for the last 69 years since The Nakba, before anyone wants to remove any blame from the Zionist Israeli state.

I signed off this morning by saying it would be great to keep in contact more often. My friend said I could no longer do this via his home, as there is virtually no opportunity because of the electricity shortage. I have to catch him at work. On 2 November it will be the centenary of the Balfour Declaration, which paved the way for Palestine to be handed to the Zionists who wanted to create Israel over the heads of the indigenous population. Britain's role has been despicable. It is incumbent on the British Government now to pressurise the Israeli Government to end the siege of Gaza and the Occupation of all Palestine. Ending the sale of arms to Israel would be a beginning, along with diplomatic measures. Please share. The world is silent. Just this week I was told, four children under the age of five have died as a consequence of what my friend, nearing desperation, has described.

Write to MPs, MEPs, anyone who might be able to pressurise the Israelis to stop the siege and the conditions in which Gaza's population is being forced to live and die.

Finally, something that everyone can do is to join the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign. Israel is already very seriously concerned about the effects of the economic boycott which was called by over 100 Palestinian organisations back in 2005, knowing full well that it can be brought to its knees. Major international companies such as Veolia and Sodastream have pulled out of trading with this brutal regime. The UK court has also ruled in favour of local councils encouraging the boycott of Israeli goods following a case brought by a pro-Israeli group. Reasons to be hopeful.
