While Occupation and blockade are business as usual for Israel, there should be no business with Israel In Occupied Palestine Zionism in practice Israel’s Daily Toll on Palestinian Life, Limb, Liberty and Property (Compiled by Leslie Bravery, Palestine Human Rights Campaign, Auckland, New Zealand www.palestine.org.nz) [If you have difficulty with the display of this report, it may be better viewed on our website] NB: We shall always do our utmost to verify the accuracy of all items in these IOP newsletters/reports wherever possible – but please forgive us for any errors or omissions (not of our own making) that may occur! Complaint against BBC bias Recent news updates: Confronting Israel’s repression with stronger BDS campaigns. Faced with the impressive growth of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, Israel and its lobby groups have, since 2014, launched a global war of repression against our non-violent movement for Palestinian human rights. Their aggressive but unsuccessful tactics have ranged from investing massive sums of money in anti-BDS propaganda to using Israel’s intelligence services to “sabotage” the movement and tarnish the reputations of its human rights defenders. In despair, Israel has resorted to legal warfare against BDS, passing and exporting anti-democratic legislation to stifle free speech, and undermining freedom of expression and association. With your support, Israel’s intimidation and bullying have only led to the growth of our movement, making it stronger and more popular. We at the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC) are fighting back with innovative approaches, reaching new terrain and strengthening our alliances with struggles for justice around the world. Inspired by the perseverance of the Palestinian popular struggle over the course of more than 70 years, we will continue to defend our people’s inalienable right to self-determination and liberation. We are running this special fundraiser, which marks BDS at 12, to help us confront the attacks on our movement as we continue to build it. Please help us create a future that guarantees human dignity and justice for all. Donations: we need your help more than ever. Jewish Voice for Peace. There are two ways the Israeli Government wages war on the people of Gaza. One is full-on military assault. Three years ago, Israeli forces dropped bombs and launched a ground invasion, killing over 2,000 people, destroying homes, displacing families, damaging hospitals, schools and other facilities. In 2012, and in 2008-09, the stories were similar. And in between these assaults, the war doesn’t stop. A decade-long, deadly blockade denies people in Gaza access to nearly every aspect of a normal, decent life, from food and medicine to building supplies and electricity. And now increased power cuts mean Gaza has as little as, well, as little as zero hours of power a day. On average, homes in Gaza have electricity for 2-4 hours daily. Last week, for the first time, an entire 24-hour period passed without any power whatsoever. But since bombs are not falling daily (for now), most of the the US media is ignoring this unbelievable crisis. Sign our petition to the New York Times and Washington Post: Cover the Gaza power crisis and its root causes: siege, occupation, and displacement. Palestinians in Gaza are living without reliable refrigeration or potable water. Hospitals can’t offer adequate care. Summer temperatures soar into the 90s with no way to cool homes. The sea is too polluted to offer any relief, because there’s also no way to treat sewage. In the absence of safe sources of light, people turn to candles, a fire hazard that has claimed the lives of children. The thing that saddens me most is that this humanitarian crisis is completely human-made. As the occupying power, the Israeli government bears ultimate responsibility for this crisis. Perhaps because the world at large ignores the daily siege on Gaza, responding only to the most spectacular military violence of direct and sustained attacks, the Israeli government thinks they’ll get away with this continuous devastation because we won’t notice, or won’t care. I care. And I know you do too. But for anything to change, people need to know what’s happening — there’s no other way we’ll muster the urgency and political will to stop it. So let’s show them we’re paying attention. Sign our petition and tell the New York Times and Washington Post to put the Gaza power crisis on the front page, where it belongs. Code Pink: Before dawn on 2 July, Israeli forces burst into the homes of Palestinian women activists, Khalida Jarrar and Khitam Saafin. The women were taken to the Ofer military prison, where they were interrogated for 30 minutes and placed in small windowless prison cells. At 4pm they were transferred to HaSharon Prison. Tell U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to pressure Israel to immediately release Khalida and Khitam! Khalida and Khitam are being held under Israel’s system of administrative detention, where secret evidence is used to hold prisoners without charge or trial. They have no idea what the charges against them are. Khalida and Khitam must be set free. Tell Secretary of State Tillerson to pressure Israel to release them. Khalida is on the Palestinian National Committee for the follow-up of the International Criminal Court. Khitam is President of the Union of Palestinian Women's Committee and has spoken internationally at many events, including the World Social Forum. From Adalah-NY: Join 88 theatre artists, including winners of four Pulitzers, three Tonys, and nine Obies, in opposing these Israeli Government-sponsored performances. As the theatre artists stated in a July 5 letter to Lincoln Center, “It is deeply troubling that Lincoln Center, one of the world’s leading cultural institutions, is helping the Israeli government to implement its systematic 'Brand Israel' strategy of employing arts and culture to divert attention from the state's decades of violent colonisation, brutal military occupation and denial of basic rights to the Palestinian people. We call on Lincoln Center to avoid complicity...by cancelling these performances.” The letter to the Lincoln Center has generated debate and widespread media coverage in outlets including The New York Times, Gothamist, Playbill, and the Jewish Daily Forward. More press coverage can be found here. The Ha’Bima and Cameri theatre companies' performances at Lincoln Center are sponsored by the Israeli Government as part of the 'Brand Israel' campaign. In addition, both groups have long been actively complicit in the Occupation and colonisation of the West Bank by repeatedly performing in illegal settlements, despite past opposition from artists, including some of their own actors. Lincoln Center President, Debora Spar, defended the performances by writing that “we do not make political statements and hope that the art we present can stand on its own.” But hosting two complicit theatre companies and receiving Israeli Government funding to do so is a political statement. The time has come for cultural workers and cultural institutions around the world to end their complicity with the Israeli Occupation, colonisation and apartheid regime. Hosting performances that are sponsored by the Israeli Government and carried out by complicit Israeli institutions is tantamount to supporting the heightened Israeli Government repression of Palestinians living under Israeli military Occupation in the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem. Despite attempts by many to silence the BDS movement, including revelations that 43 US senators hope to implement a law that could make it a felony for Americans to support boycotts against Israel, the global movement continues to grow. Be a part of the growing movement for cultural boycott against Israel until it complies with international law and upholds Palestinian human rights!
