2 killed in Israeli air strike on Syria. The deadly bombing occurred in the early hours of Thursday, according to the head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul Rahman. He said Israeli war planes flying in Lebanese air space hit two facilities, a scientific research centre and a nearby military base where short-range surface-to-surface missiles are stored. He said the attack killed two people and wounded five. “Many explosions were heard in the area after the air raid,” said Abdul Rahman, whose group relies on a network of activists across the country. http://gulfnews.com/news/mena/palestine/israeli-strike-in-syria-targeted-hezbollah-weapons-1.2086486

Netanyahu reveals Israel has struck Syria with 'dozens' of air strikes. The Israeli Prime Minister was caught unaware that his admission was being picked up by a live microphone. The confirmation of the air strikes was voiced during a meeting with Eastern European leaders in Budapest on Wednesday, although the meeting was supposed to have occurred behind closed door. “We blocked the border not only in Egypt but in the Golan Heights,” he said, according to Haaretz. Israel continues to militarily occupy the Syrian Golan Heights.

NZ assistance for Myanmar humanitarian crisis. New Zealand will contribute $1.5 million for humanitarian assistance in response to the crisis in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Foreign Minister Gerry Brownlee has announced in a Press Release. The funding will be used by the Red Cross Movement to help affected people in Myanmar and across the border in Bangladesh. Mr Brownlee says, “this support will help meet critical the humanitarian needs, through providing emergency food, water, healthcare and household items.” He stated further that: “The New Zealand Government is very concerned with the violence and humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State. http://scoop.co.nz/stories/PA201709/S00067.htm

Israel continues to arm Myanmar’s military junta. haaretz.com United Nations data show that about 60,000 members of the minority group have recently fled Myanmar’s Rahine state, driven out by the increasing violence and the burning of their villages, information that has been confirmed by satellite images. But none of this has led to a change in the policy of the Israeli Defence Ministry, which is refusing to halt weapons sales to the regime in Myanmar, the south-east Asian country formerly known as Burma. The Nobel Prize-winning human rights activist, Aung San Suu Kyi's Government has no control over the country’s security forces, since private militias are loyal to the junta that formerly controlled Myanmar. Despite what is reported by the United Nations envoy to the country and by Harvard University researchers, the commission of crimes of this kind is continuing, yet the Israeli Government persists in supplying weapons to the regime. One of the leaders of the Myanmar junta, Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, visited Israel in September 2015 to talk with Israeli military manufacturers. His delegation met President Reuven Rivlin as well as military officials, including the army’s chief of staff, and visited military bases and the arms contractors Elbit Systems and Elta Systems. In August 2016, an Israeli company that specialises in providing military training and equipment posted images on a website of training with Israeli-made Corner Shot rifles, along with a statement that Myanmar had adopted operational use of the weapons. While most of the world imposed sanctions on Myanmar following a 1988 military coup and the annulment of democratic elections in 1990, Israel began to invest more in the country's military in order to help modernise their weapons capability. On 5 June, in answer to a parliamentary question by Knesset member Tamar Zandberg on weapons sales to Myanmar, Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that Israel, “subordinates [itself] to the entire enlightened world, that is the Western states, and first of all the United States, the largest arms exporter. We subordinate ourselves to them and maintain the same policy.” The Lieberman statement was misleading.

Question for Foreign Affairs Minister Gerry Brownlee regarding aid to Myanmar. In announcing New Zealand's contribution of $1.5 million for humanitarian assistance in response to the crisis in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Foreign Affairs Minister, Gerry Brownlee, noted that: “The New Zealand Government is very concerned with the violence and humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State.” That being so, will the Minister and his Government join with rest of the world community in condemning Israel's profiteering from the violence and misery being perpetrated upon the population? If not, will he admit that his expressed concern over the violence and humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State” is not as important to him as is his loyalty to Israel?
