Recent news updates:

Will Israel become a UN Security Council Member? Since its establishment atop the ruins of Palestinian cities and villages in 1948, Israel has had the most precarious relationship with the world's largest international body. It has desperately sought to be legitimised by the UN, while it has done its utmost to de-legitimise the UN. Following a resolution in March 2014 at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), condemning Israel's human rights abuses in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, then accused the UN of being 'absurd'. He vowed to “continue to denounce and expose” the UN “procession of hypocrisy”. Israel was in no rush to comply with international law. But two major events have forced an Israeli re-think. First, in December 2016, the US abstained from a UN resolution that condemned Israel's illegal settlement activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. By breaking with a decades-long tradition of shielding Israel from any international censure, it appeared that even Washington’s seemingly undying allegiance to Tel Aviv was uncertain. Second, the rise of the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement began changing the dynamics of international politics regarding the Israeli Occupation. The movement, which began as a call by Palestinian civil society to hold Israel accountable for its violations of Palestinian human rights, grew rapidly to become a global movement. Hundreds of local BDS groups multiplied around the world, joined by artists, academicians, union members and elected politicians. Within a few years, BDS has registered as a serious tool of pressure used to denounce the Israeli Occupation and demand justice for the Palestinian people. Read full article

Palestinians submit Israeli 'war crime' evidence to ICC. Four Palestinian groups allege high-level Israeli officials are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Four Palestinian human rights groups have submitted a 700-page communication to the International Criminal Court (ICC), alleging that high-level Israeli officials have been complicit in committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Israeli-Occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/09/palestinians-submit-israel-war-crime-evidence-icc-170920115342560.html

Demolishing Palestinian communities and expelling their residents would constitute a war crime. Letter to Netanyahu: Last week, Ha’aretz reported (29 August 2017) that according to Minister Avigdor Lieberman, the Defence Ministry is “preparing for the evacuation of Palestinian communities built without authorisation.” According to the report, [h]e said work was being done to implement plans to evacuate the Palestinian villages of Sussia in the South Hebron Hills and Khan al-Ahmar near Ma’aleh Adumim within a few months”. As clarified in the following, should these intentions be realised, they would constitute a war crime carried out at your instruction and under your personal responsibility. This letter is sent in an attempt to stop the commission of such a crime. Read more

Israeli soldiers uproot West Bank crops – agricultural sabotage. On Wednesday, Israeli forces uprooted dozens of fruit trees and bulldozed crops on Palestinian land west of the West Bank city of Nablus. Tareq Hazzaa, owner of the land, said that a bulldozer, escorted by Israeli Civil Administration forces, razed more than 50 fig and lemon trees that were bearing fruit. He said he was told, by Occupation forces, that the work was undertaken to expand the main Nablus-Tulkarem road near the Beit Lid crossroads, and to create a roundabout in the area. Israeli forces and settlers regularly attack olive and fruit trees in a bid to oust Palestinian farmers from their land, and a loss of a year’s crops can cause destitution for farming families. Beit Lid is adjacent to the illegal Israeli Occupation settlement, Einav. Over the years, hundreds of Palestinian fruit trees have been uprooted and the land annexed for settlement development.

US “Defence” bill showers cash on Israel and Ukraine. Hundreds of millions of dollars for Israeli missiles and Ukrainian troops’ medical care, at US taxpayers’ expense. The US$500 million earmarked for the Ukrainian military will also cover the treatment of its soldiers in American hospitals, including “transportation, lodging, meals and other appropriate non-medical support in connection with such treatment.” While Trump sets massive sums of American taxpayer dollars aside to provide Ukrainian troops with first-class medical care, his Administration has proposed cutting some $800 billion from Medicaid and other healthcare programmes servicing poor and working-class Americans. http://www.salon.com/2017/09/22/unprecedented-u-s-money-going-to-israel-and-ukraine_partner/
