The findings presented in the HNO include: At least 1.9 million Palestinians experience, or are at risk of, conflict and violence, displacement and denial of access to livelihoods, among other threats. The most vulnerable Palestinians are currently denied or restricted in their access to essential services, such as water and health care. A recurrent cycle of shocks, natural and man-made, has eroded the resilience of vulnerable households to cope with the prolonged nature of the humanitarian crisis. Across the OPt, one in two Palestinians, or roughly two and a half million people, will need some form of humanitarian assistance in 2018. The 2018 HNO is the culmination of several months of dedicated efforts by the humanitarian community working in OPt. It will serve as the analytical foundation for the 2018-2020 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP), which will be formally launched in early 2018. Jordan to continue its role in Jerusalem. Jordan will continue to undertake its historical and religious role as protector of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, in line with the Hashemite Custodianship and with the aim of preserving the Arab, Muslim and Christian identity of the city. https://www.albawaba.com/news/jordan-will-maintain-role-protector-holy-sites-jerusalem-king-abdullah-1064084 Opening of new synagogue defies UNESCO vote on resolution which denied any Jewish connection to Al-Aqsa Mosque and Al-Buraq Wall in Occupied Jerusalem. https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20171219-israel-unveils-new-synagogue-in-jerusalems-al-aqsa/Israeli Army bulldozes farmland in Central Gaza. https://www.maannews.com/Content.aspx?id=779647Jordan Valley settlements to be expanded. 20 December 2017 | The Israeli Ministry of Settlement and National Fund has announced a new settlement plan in the Jordan Valley, including doubling the number of Israeli settlers and constructing three more settlements. Haaretz reports that there are 20 settlements in the Jordan Valley, housing about 4,500 settlers. It explained that the goal of the plan is to increase the number of settlers in the valley, and that the Israeli Government has not yet officially approved the plan. The state has doubled up on the settlements process, in Occupied Jerusalem and the West Bank, since the US declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. http://imemc.org/article/jordan-valley-settlements-to-be-expanded/Free the Tamimi family. At 3am, 19 December, Israeli soldiers burst into the Tamimi family home and dragged 16-year-old Ahed Tamimi out of bed. They placed her in handcuffs and put her in the back of their military jeep. The next day, her mother Nariman was arrested at the police station, trying to find her daughter. The following afternoon, her 21-year-old cousin Nour was also taken prisoner. The Tamimi family have lived their entire lives under Israeli military rule, never knowing a single day of true freedom. It is their right and responsibility to protest for Palestinian freedom and equality. At issue in particular in the resolution was Israeli use of water, natural gas and land, and its failure to allow the Palestinians to develop those resources for their own needs. Israel must reimburse the Palestinians for its use of natural resources in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, the UN General Assembly said on Wednesday in a resolution that passed 163 to 6, with 11 abstentions. It is the second day in a row that the General Assembly has passed a pro-Palestinian resolution. The text also called on Israel to halt such activity on the Golan Heights. Israel must “bring a halt to all actions, including those perpetrated by Israeli settlers, harming the environment, including the dumping of all kinds of waste materials” in territory over the pre-1967 lines, the resolution said. It called on Israel to halt its destruction of “vital infrastructure, including water pipelines, sewage networks and electricity networks, and to cease its demolition and confiscation of Palestinian homes and civilian infrastructure, agricultural lands and water wells.” The General Assembly member states also took issue with Israel’s construction of the West Bank security barrier, which it said prevents the Palestinians from accessing their natural resources. Separately, it asked Israel to halt settlement activity, including its actions in East Jerusalem. The resolution stated that Israel must “cease immediately and completely all policies and measures aimed at the alteration of the character and status of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.” http://www.jpost.com/International/UNGA-to-Israel-Stop-exploiting-Palestinian-resources-519623 UN weekly report: http://mailchi.mp/un/protection-of-civilians-weekly-report-4-18-april-543569?e=47f1bb36d5 Defence for Children International. This month, the number of Palestinian children in Israeli military detention spiked dramatically and we need your help more than ever. In the first 19 days of December, new Palestinian child detainees arriving at Israel's Ofer military prison increased 120% over the previous month. As a local Palestinian human rights organisation, our staff is on the front lines of the Occupation, defending children facing ill-treatment and torture. Our attorneys and field researchers have doubled their efforts to keep up with the deteriorating situation on the ground. As Israeli forces carry out abuses against Palestinian children in plain view of the international community without being held accountable, we need individuals like you to speak out and help sustain our crucial work.
